Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists can be Pelvic Therapists!

Pelvic floor therapy is a catch all term that doesn’t give much information about the training of the person administering the care. So, let’s talk about it!

Pelvic Physical Therapists vs Pelvic Occupational Therapist

In the pelvic health space, pelvic floor therapy should only be performed by a licensed PT (physical therapist) or OT (occupational therapist). Both have significant training in helping individuals rehabilitate from various injuries and conditions.

In pelvic floor therapy, a provider who is trained as a pelvic floor PT and a provider who is trained as a pelvic floor OT can both perform pelvic floor therapy.

Whether a provider is designated as a “PT” or “OT” will depend on the post-graduate training of the provider.

Historically, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists have a physical therapy training which typically accompanies more training in biomechanics and kinesiology (how does the body move and how do the joints function).

Occupational Therapists, on the other hand, have more training in psychosocial impacts of disease and how that affects how well an individual recovers.

Since pelvic health depends on biomechanics, kinesiology, AND how things like stress, lifestyle, and our thoughts can play a role, both disciplines make a wonderful contribution to the field of pelvic health therapy.

Physical Therapists need more training in the emotional aspect of injuries and symptoms, and Occupational Therapists typically need more training on biomechanics.

This is part of a pelvic floor therapist’s continuing education so that we can comprehensively treat pelvic health patients.

Our Staff at Vivid

At Vivid, we utilize pelvic floor PTs and pelvic floor OTs to deliver pelvic floor rehab.

Both are trained with extensive post-graduate training on internal and external treatment of pelvic health conditions and each brings its own lens to treating pelvic health patients.

In addition to post graduate training, our pelvic floor specialists engage in rigorous onboarding, mentorship, and continuing education aimed at women’s health rehab.

You can get treated by a pelvic health OT and a pelvic health PT in the same capacity.

It is more important that your therapist is looking at you comprehensively and as a whole person, instead of looking solely at your pelvic floor.

If you have the benefit of working with both a Pelvic health OT and a Pelvic PT, you may experience a slightly different process, but both disciplines have the training, knowledge and ability to get you the results that you were looking for including that of living an active lifestyle.
