Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs on Pelvic PT

  • Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissue of the pelvis.

These structures play an important role in bladder and bowel control, core strength, sexual health, pregnancy and postpartum recovery, perimenopause and overall comfort in daily life.

Pelvic therapy should be comprehensive and look at the whole body. Good pelvic floor PT not only works on the pelvic floor but also gives patients strategies to improve: sleep, stress management, hormone fluctuations, lifestyle factors, movement demands, and current activity levels.

  • Pelvic therapy can benefit women at many stages of life, including:

    • Pregnancy and postpartum

    • Perimenopause and menopause

    • Athletes and active women

    • Women with pelvic pain or core weakness

    • Women with pain with tampon insertion and gynecological exams

    • Anyone experiencing bladder, bowel, or sexual health concerns

You do not need to be postpartum to benefit from pelvic therapy.

  • You may benefit from pelvic health physical therapy if you experience:

    • Bladder leakage, urgency, or frequent urination

    • Pelvic pain, pressure, or heaviness

    • Pain with sex, tampons, or pelvic exams

    • Low back, hip, or tailbone pain

    • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)

    • Difficulty with safely increasing your exercise routine

    • Painful periods or endometriosis-related symptoms

If something doesn’t feel right “down there”, it’s worth a conversation with a pelvic floor PT

  • No. While pelvic therapy is well known for postpartum care, many women who have never been pregnant can absolutely benefit from pelvic floor PT.

Pelvic floor issues can come at any age, and any stage of a woman’s life. Symptoms be related to stress, posture, hormonal changes, exercise habits, surgeries, or chronic tension.

  • Pelvic physical therapy can help improve:

    • Bladder and bowel control

    • Pelvic pain and painful intercourse

    • Core strength and stability

    • Pregnancy and birth preparation and postpartum recovery

    • Scar tissue and surgical recovery

    • Confidence returning to fitness and daily activities

Our goal is to not let pelvic health symptoms affect you from living an active life.

  • We always advise wearing something comfortable that you can move around in.

Many of our treatments involve working around the abdomen and hip areas so we usually advise patients to avoid wearing a jumpsuit or romper.

FAQs on Pelvic Floor Treatment

  • Your first visit is a one-on-one, unhurried conversation and comprehensive assessment.

We’ll do a lot of talking to review your medical history, symptoms, lifestyle, goals, and concerns.

Your therapist may also assess posture, breathing, movement, pelvic floor strength, and coordination. Any hands-on assessment is discussed in advance and performed only with your full consent.

Your initial evaluation may also consist of an internal pelvic floor assessment. This involves an intravaginal assessment (or sometimes intrarectal assessment depending on patient comfort).

During an internal exam, patients are on our heated tables, and use real linens to cover as a drape. Modesty with internal exams is our top priority and we do not use stirrups or speculums.

  • An internal exam is never required. Since the pelvic floor is often the missing link to a patient’s symptoms, many women seeking pelvic PT benefit from intra-vaginal and/or intra-rectal work.

However, since the pelvic floor is affected by other muscles that attach to the pelvis, many women can achieve improved symptoms without internal work.

We will always explain options and respect your comfort level. You are in control of your care at all times.

  • Your care is always comprehensive and individualized. Treatment may include:

    • Education and guided exercise

    • Breathing and nervous system regulation

    • Manual therapy (external or internal, if appropriate)

    • Postural and movement retraining

    • Scar tissue work

    • Functional strengthening for daily life and exercise

  • Since all of our sessions are entirely one-on-one, the session is completely customized to you and your needs.

Your therapist will discuss your goals and your lifestyle to design the best plan for you.

Your therapist will not be juggling multiple patients at a time, and an aide or tech will not be involved in your case.

  • This varies based on your goals and symptoms.

Our goal is thatevery patient leaves our practice without having to worry about their pelvic floor affecting their activity.

Ideally we like our patients to plan to be seen weekly for at least the first 6-8 weeks of treatment (for more longstanding symptoms, weekly visits will extend beyond that).

  • Yes. However you and your therapist will discuss what treatments are best for you.

Some patients come to us requesting internal pelvic treatment at every session since it makes such a big improvement in their symptoms.

Some patients don’t feel comfortable with internal treatment and can see excellent results using external techniques, movement retraining, breathing work, and education alone.

As impactful as it can be at helping symptoms, internal work is just one tool—not a requirement.
