Stress Urinary Incontinence

What is stress urinary incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is involuntary leakage of urine that occurs as a result of activity. Most commonly stress incontinence occurs with coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, or impact activities.

Leakage typically occurs due to inability of the pelvic floor to control the pressure that is placed on it. Addressing why the leakage is there, and understanding how you body is managing pressure placed on the pelvic floor is the key to resolving stress incontinence. It isn’t all about Kegels, but rather about teaching your body how to coordinate the pelvic floor with the rest of your body.
Sometimes the root cause of the leakage could be a problem at your back, hips, core or even your feet.

How can pelvic floor PT help with managing symptoms of stress urinary incontinence?

Pelvic floor therapy aims to address the weaknesses within the pelvic floor, core and hip muscles. The goal of pelvic floor therapy is to have you participate in any activity, without leakage.

Pelvic floor therapists provide hand-on manual treatments, individualized exercises and discuss lifestyle modifications in order to reduce leakage and allow you to improve your activity level, with little to no symptoms.
